THE MULTI-PART PRINT PROJECT

A check list for the creation and management of a multi-part print project

What is the end-use of the kit and of its components?

  • How long must it last?
  • How is the kit to be distributed?
  • Will size and weight affect the postal distribution costs?
  • What are the budget realities?
  • Are your preferred substrate choices available in all sizes and thicknesses required for the project?
  • How will colors and branding values be respected while using board stock, coated and uncoated papers and plastic as substrates?
  • How will these same values be respected when production methods for the components include litho printing, digital printing with variable data and possibly silk screen print on the CD and a corrugated mailer box?
  • Will your initial design ideas affect the various manufacturers’ ability to achieve your desired print result without defects (ie ghosting, background color variance etc)? Distribute PDF renditions of your design ideas to your printer as early as possible in the process, preferably at the initial discussion phase.
  • Are extra PMS colors necessary because of process and substrate challenges?
  • How will die cutting and finishing (converting) add risk and how should these risks be resolved?
  • If film lamination is necessary to assure the quality of some pieces, how might it affect the printed colors and the cross matching of all elements?
  • Which item will take the longest to produce? This will affect project timelines and indicate where to begin the design and production cycle. This item is also likely to drive the color match consideration for elements to be produced later in the manufacturing cycle.
  • How will you coordinate the efforts of multiple manufacturers in terms of maintaining your branding values and critical timelines?

A preliminary consultation with your print partner that answers all of the these questions will allow you to create winning models, design efficiently, and create a finished product which maximizes the value for your client while delivering on time and on budget.
